About This Site

The Fishing Gear and Tackle List publishes first-hand reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the gear shore anglers actually carry: spinning rods and reels, tackle storage, ground rod holders, crappie jigs and fishing line. Everything is written for parents and everyday anglers fishing from banks and public piers.

Fishing Safety

Fishing around water carries real risks, especially with children. Keep children within arm's reach near deep water, piers and steep or slippery banks, and use a properly fitted life jacket whenever conditions or local rules call for one. Banks can give way, and wet pier boards can be slick.

Hooks are sharp. Look behind you before every cast, wear eye protection when you can, keep hooks covered in storage, and supervise children when they tie, bait or cast. Treat a hook injury as a medical issue if it is deep or near the eye. Keep sharp tools such as line cutters and knives away from small children.

Get off the water at the first sign of lightning, since a fishing rod is a long conductor. Watch for overhead power lines before casting. Use sun protection and drink water on hot days. Fishing licenses, seasons and catch limits vary by state and water body, so check your state's rules before you go, and follow local advisories on eating what you catch.
